AMERICAN NEW GENRES ARTIST

xiouping

xiouping (b. analog era), affectionately known as “TNT” for their Taiwanese and Texan roots, is an American New Genres artist whose work serves as a vital intersection of identity politics and storytelling. Through installations, sculpture, photography, writing, video, and performance, xiouping navigates time and space, meditating on the diaspora of animacy and co-worlding cultural heritage. Their practice deconstructs oppressive systems and societal norms, fostering a reclamation of agency, healing, and a subversion of dominant narratives, while challenging the relationship between art and audience.

Academic recognitions include a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the San Francisco Art Institute and a Master of Fine Arts with a Distinguished Studio Award from Otis College of Art and Design. xiouping has exhibited across the US and Mexico City, with notable showcases in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, and Salt Lake City.

They developed Modalities of Performance, a curriculum exploring rest as resistance, ritual as activism, embodiment as connection, and somatics as transformative practice.

In their lecture A Seed is Born: From the Soil We Rise to the Soil We Will Return, xiouping uses seeds as metaphors for resilience within grief rituals.

Currently, they divide their time between Venice Beach and the Sequoias, drawing inspiration from both landscapes to inform their work.

The Alchemy of words
A Discourse on the Power of Language

Words are my compass, my canvas, and my sanctuary. They are the architects of thought, the weavers of worlds, and the silent witnesses to the human condition. To write is to breathe life into

the ineffable, to distill the chaos of existence into something tangible, something resonant. I am a collector of words, a curator of ideas, and a craftsman of narratives. Whether through essays that dissect the fabric of society, curriculums that shape minds, poems that sing the unsung, or neologisms

that birth new realities, I find myself endlessly enchanted by the infinite possibilities of language.

Writing, for me, is not merely an act of expression—it is an act of discovery. Each sentence is a journey, each paragraph a revelation. In the quiet spaces between letters, I find meaning; in the rhythm of syntax, I find music. To write is to engage in a dialogue with the self, with the world, and with the infinite. It is to wrestle with the abstract and emerge with something concrete, something that can be held, shared, and cherished.

My work is a testament to the belief that words are not static symbols but living entities. They evolve, they adapt, and they transcend. Through essays, I explore the intersections of culture, identity, and philosophy, seeking to illuminate the threads that bind us all. Through curriculums, I strive to empower others with the tools to navigate and shape their own narratives. Through poetry, I give voice to the whispers of the soul, the ache of longing, and the ecstasy of being. And through neologisms, I revel in the joy of creation, coining new lexicons to describe the indescribable.

Writing is my rebellion against the ephemeral, my attempt to etch something enduring into the annals of time. It is my way of saying, “I was here. I felt this. I mattered.” And yet, it is also an invitation—a call to others to join me in this dance of discovery, to find their own voice in the symphony of human expression.

If my words resonate with you, if they stir something within you, then I invite you to reach out. Let us converse, let us collaborate, let us create. For in the end, it is not the words themselves that matter, but the connections they forge, the worlds they build, and the lives they touch.

self portraits
“Since 1989, I've been capturing self-portraits, spanning the analog to digital eras, I've also served as the muse for numerous photographers and artists. I take these captured images, through the mediums of assemblage, painting, and sculpture, I reconstruct and reimagine them, reclaiming my narrative and agency creating new compositions. “
